Son of Joseph Atchley Jr and Mary (Smith) Atchley. Married Mahala Elizabeth Tillery, daughter of William Pearson Tillery and Eliza Ann (Seay) Tillery, on 22 Jan 1856 in Meigs County, TN. His brother, John Riley Atchley, who was married to his bride's sister, witnessed the marriage ceremony.

A WPA Cemetery Survey of the Pisgah Cemetery, conducted in the 1930s, noted the presence of a headstone for William Atchley upon which was inscribed his dates of birth and death. This headstone no longer stands in this cemetery.
