Miscellaneous
Seventeenth century England suffered a weak economy, low wages, high unemployment, scarce commodities. The eldest son usually inherited the estate of the family leaving the remaining children to determine their future. Many looked to America. In 1642 civil war broke out in England between Charles I and the Parliament, Oliver Cromwell.
Charles I was beheaded in 1649 and Cromwells army set about persecuting the Royalists. Many of the Royalists sought refuge in America which later became known as the "Tidewater Aristocracy".
