He was taken ill on his first trip there which forced him to turn to turn back. On his third trip he arrived in China. The Chinese, at that tie, resented missionaries and were about to take him prisoner. There had been a long drought there, Hunter Corbett knelt and prayed for rain. While he was praying it began to rain, and he make converts right then.
He was instrumental in having Chinese girls taught to make lace, which caused them to become commercially valuable, thereby eliminating the killing of the girl babies, as was the custom.
His family, to the three wives, was referred to as "Ancient-Medieval and Modern." His children were sent back to Wooster, Ohio, to a Presbyterian College to be educated, but returned to China, where most of them became missionaries.
Hunter Corbett died in Chefoo, China, where he had lived. There were 10 children.
