Arturo Carrera , 81 of Las Cruces, NM died December 22, 2002 at his home. He was born in Miami, Arizona on April 28, 1921 to Arturo and Amalia Carrera.
He started out with a hard life losing his father at the age of 3. Moving to El Paso, Texas he was forced to quit school at an early age to work to support his ailing mother and brother. He started at a Glass company in El Paso learning his trade as a glazier. He was called up for duty in the US Army to serve in WWII. He served in many of the great battles including, the D-day invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach, the Battle of The Bulge, the Battle of Hurricane Forrest, and then in the Occupation of Germany. In May 2001 he received a metal from The French Government for his participation in the Normandy Invasion. After his Honorable discharge from the service he returned to El Paso and resumed his career as a Glazier. In 1947 he was asked to move to Las Cruces to help set up the first glass shop. He was the first glass man in Las Cruces. He installed glass in most of the older buildings at NMSU, many of the schools, and the Wells Fargo Bank building. He was known as "Art the Glass Man". In 1965 his dream became a reality and started his own business with his wife Jane. In 1969 Art Glass Inc was born and became the largest glass company in southern New Mexico. He retired in 1994, his son and daughter continue his dream running the business. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Frank.
He is survived by his wife Jane, and his ten children; Lupe Thompson and Husband Jerry of North Fork, CA. Art Carrera and wife Janis of Nuevo, CA. John Carrera and wife Terry of Riverside, CA. Louie Carrera and wife Lucia of Las Cruces, NM. Ernest Tafalla and wife Devonna of Redman, OR. Cathy Carrera Kenny of Arvada, CO. Gary Carerra and wife Sandra of TorC, NM. Jesse Carrera and wife Lisa of Las Cruces, NM. Teri Russo and husband Joe of Katy, TX. and Amy Carrera Little and husband Jerry of Las Cruces, NM. Art is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from at Getz Funeral Home on Friday December 27, 2002. A prayer vigil will follow at 7:00 P.M. the same evening also to be held at the Getz Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral mass will be given at 12:00 P.M. Saturday December 28, 2002 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
