Death
Another pioneer resident of Boyden, Mrs. Abraham Van Roekel, quietly passed away at her home in Boyden on Tuesday, November 20, after an illness of nearly four years, at the age of 70 years, 2 months and 29 days.Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 23 at 1 o'clock p.m. in the house and at 1:30 o'clock in the First Reformed church. The Rev. J. M. Lumkes will have charge of the services. The Rev. D. Douwstra from Rock Valley, an intimate friend of the family, and also her former pastor, will also take part in the service in the church.
Mrs. Abraham Van Roekel, nee Neeltje VanderKrol, was born in Beenekom, the Netherlands, on August 22, 1858. As a child of seven years of age, she journeyed with her parents to Pella, Iowa. On the trip to the United States, her mother died on the ocean and was buried in the deep.
She was united in marriage in 1876 to Mr. Abraham VanRoekel in Pella. In 1883 the family moved to Sioux County, where she lost her husband on January 24, 1917.
Her surviving children are Mrs. D. J. Fransen, in Ashton; John, in Boyden; Gerrit, in Sioux Center; George, in Sioux Center; Anton, in Orange City; Mrs. J. Van Engen, in Archer; Mrs. H. C. Langstraat, in Newkirk; Willem, in Sioux Center; Hendrik, in Boyden; Bert in Sheldon; Mrs. Harry Rensink in Boyden.
Seventy-three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren mourn her loss.
The deceased was a kind and beloved mother who had the respect of the entire community. Her passing is deeply regretted by all, and the relatives have the sympathy of everybody who knew her.
