Marriage
Lewis Vander Lugt received his education in Holland schools and came to America at the age of 21. In Iowa he met and married Magdalene Sluiter, of Rotterdam, Holland. They had seven children: Leonard, William, Gertrude, Betty, Herbert, Arthur and Magdalene.At the time of his death, Lewis Vander Lugt had brothers; Peyer of Minnesota, Adolph of Holland, John, Tunis and Herbert of Grand Rapids, James of California and Cornelius of South Dakota.
Lewis and Magdalene began married life on a farm in Iowa. The family moved to Gary,Indiana in 1927 where Lewis was employed by the Gary School System as a groundskeeper at the Lew Wallace School. He was a member of the Ross Reformed Church. He was very active in civic affairs, was an officer in the School System Union and held the position of Elder in his church.
