Jan was 19 years old when he arrived in America along with his older brother, Pieter aboard the S.S. Finland which saled from Antwerp, Belgium. Jan and Pieter settled in Rock Valley, Iowa, USA where their sister Magdalena (Lena) lived.

Death

He suffered severe should and arm injuries while working on a road grading crew. The injuries led to tetanus and death.
