Julia M. (Toots) Kunshek, 98, of Pittsburg, formerly of Girard, passed away at 2:44 p.m., Thursday August 30, 2012 in the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, KS.

Julia was born January 22, 1914, in Brazilton, KS. a daughter of John Henry Stolte and Jessae Sophia Meyer.

Jessae passed away from compilations of the flu when Julia was four years old. John then wed Anna Mathilda "Tillie" Meyer Stolte. Julia helped raise her younger brother Floyd. She also had an older brother, Edward, and two younger half-siblings, Cecil Stolte and Shirley Stolte Meister. They all preceded her in death.

Julia (often known by her nickname "Toots") completed the 8th grade in Brazilton, worked as a housemaid, and later at a café in Erie, Kansas.

She married Tony Kunshek, Jr. on February 24, 1940. Tony was originally from Breezy Hill, Kansas and they had a daughter, Barbara, in 1941.

The family lived on various farms northwest of Girard before settling on a farm 4 miles north and one half mile west of Girard.

During 1970 and 1971, Julia worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons, Kansas.

For many years she was active on the election board and in the Girard Bowling League.

Julia continued to live on the farm after Tony's death in 1986.

She enjoyed traveling to Branson, Missouri during her retirement years.

Since 1999, she lived in the Westridge Retirement Community in Girard and in recent months at the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg.

Julia was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Girard.

During her long life, Julia personally experienced the advent of women's voting rights, mechanized agriculture, rural electrification, rural telephone service, and indoor plumbing. She was a witness to all the amazing history of the 20th Century and the dawn of the 21st.

Survivors are a daughter, Barbara Multhaup and her husband Ray of League City, Texas; her grandchildren Steven Multhaup of Houston, Texas; Linda Bean of Girard; Karen Ibay of New York, New York; cousins Marie Meyer Hill, Nadine Viets, and Mildred Ellison, as well as 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
