Louis I was appointed Count of Verdun in 1024, a position that he was given after Herman, Count of Ename, retired to a monastery. Herman of Ename was the son of Godfrey "The Prisoner" Count of Verdun. Godfrey "The Bearded" wanted to be Count of Verdun. Gothelo, Herman's brother and Godfrey's father, invaded Verdun and murdered Louis.
