William DePriest

William DePriest was born in St. Peter's Parish of New Kent County, Virginia on 24 Oct 1689. William died 2 Mar 1737 in Goochland County, Virginia, at 48 years of age. When Hanover was formed from New Kent County the DePriest family was in the new county.
He married Judith. Her last name is unknown. Judith was born about 1705. She died after 1755. She married twice. She married first William DePriest. She married second John Hodges sometime betweem August 1749 and December 1750. John was a neighbor of the DePriests along Lickinghole Creek.
William and his young family lived in Hanover County until the spring of 1734 when William purchased 200 acres of land in Goochland County from William Swift. In his will William made provisions for the education of five children. In 1749 Judith accounted for the expenses of raising seven children. By 1755, the first time there is an accounting by name of their children, there were only six children and two were underage. By implication, one child had died between 1749 and 1755. Also the two youngest boys, John and Robert, must have been twins born after William's death.
The following is an entry into the Goochland County, Virginia Records (DB 7 p 13 19)
April 1755/17 June 1755: "Randolph DePriest, William DePriest, George Southerland and John Salmon are held firmly bound to John Hodges for 100 lbs. Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound, RD, WD, GS, and JS have this day agreed with the said John Hodges who intermarried with the widow of William DePriest Decd. and mother of the above bound RD, WD, wives of GS, JS that the wife of John Hodges is to have one feather bed, and the furniture thereunto belonging and one iron pot of the estate of William DePriest and the above bound RD, WD, GS, JS and the infants Robert DePriest and John DePriest the remaining part of the estate now to be found by John Hodges and Judith, his wife. There is some evidence that John and Judith moved to Pittslyvania County in the 1760s.
Some researchers think Judith's last name is possibly Austin. The theory is based primarily on the close association of some descendants with the Austin family in Texas and the use of Austin as a first name by one line of descendants beginning in the third generation. By similar logic, Judith could be a Randolph. Judith was a common given name in that family and she named her son Randolph. The Randolph family of Virginia had a very strong tradition of naming a son with the mother's maiden name. The name Randolph continued in the DePriest line for many generations and in several lines. Another possiblity currently being researching is that her last name was Williams.
William DePriest and Judith had the following children:

ii. Randolph DePriest was born in Hanover County, Virginia about 1728. He married Mary Mims in Goochland County, Virginia, 1751.
iii. William DePriest was born about 1733.
iv. Naomi DePriest was born in Hanover County, Virginia about 1729. Naomi died after 24 January 1791 at approximately 61 years of age. She married John Salmon on 6 Jun 1759. John died before 1791 in Bedford County, Virginia.
v. Mary DePriest was born in Hanover County, Virginia about 1731. She married George Southerland [Sutherlin] III about 1755. George was born about 1725. George died 1804 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia at 79 years of age.
George and Mary had both a grandson and a great grandson who were participants in the Battle of the Alamo. Their grandson, Dr. John Sutherland, was the physician for the garrison before Santa Anna's attack on the Alamo. At the time of the attack Col. Travis had sent John as a courier to seek reinforcements. He returned a few days after the Battle. His brother, George "Cinco" Sutherland V's son, William DePriest Sutherland, 18, died in the Battle of the Alamo. (See "The Doctor and the Defender" ) Many members of the Texas line of Sutherlands became prominent in founding the Republic of Texas and then the state. The best known contemporary member of the family is Elizabeth Sutherland Carpenter, aka Liz Carpenter, press secretary for former first lady Lady Bird Johnson.
vi. John DePriest was born in Goochland County, Virginia about 1738. John died 13 January 1800 at 61 years of age. He married Elizabeth Rice in Goochland County, Virginia, 6 June 1759.
vii.Robert DePriest was born in Goochland County, Virginia about 1738. He married Martha Bailey in Goochland County, Virginia, 15 October 1766.
