Merovech, King of the Franks

Merovingians was a dynasty of Frankish kings, descended from the semi-legendary MEROVEUS, chief of the Salian Franks, whose grandson CLOVIS I founded the Frankish monarchy (481). (The Columbia Viking Desk Encyclopedia, 1953)
MEROVINGIANS, dynasty of Frankish kings that flourished from the 5th cent. to 751. They traced their descent from the semilegendary MEROVECH, or MEROVEUS, chief of the Salian Franks. His grandson, COLVIS I, founded the Frankish monarchy in 481. His descendants divided his domains into Austrasia, Neustria, Aquitaine, Burgundy, Paris and Orleans. These territories were often combined and sometimes reunited under a single Merovingian ruler. DAGOBERT I (c. 612-c.639) was the last Merovingian to exercise personal power. His successors, the "idle kings," left governing to the mayors of the palace, the Carolingians. In 751, PEPIN THE SHORT deposed Childeric III, the last Merovingian king.
