Chlodovech I (Clovis), King of The Franks

(463 - 11 Nov 511)

CLOVIS I, c. 466-511, Frankish King (481-511), founder of Frankish monarchy (see Merovingians). Rose from tribal chieftain to sole leadership of Salian Franks by dint of patience and murder; conquered most of Gaul and SW Germany by defeating Romans (486, at Soissons), Alemanni (496), Burgundians (500), Visgoths (507, at Vouille). His wife, ST CLOTILDA, a Burgundian princess, encouraged his conversion to Christianity, but he was baptized only after 496, in fulfillment of a vow made in battle against Alemanni.

The Franks, were a group of Germanic tribes which by the 3rd century had settled along the Rhine. Salian Franks moved into Gaul in the 4th century as Roman allies. Their leader was CLOVIS I who united all Franks under his kingship (481), accepted Christianity, founded dynasty of Merovinginans. He and his successors conquered most of West and central Europe, but the Frankish empire was divided among his descendants into kingdoms of AQUITAINE, NEUSTRIA, AUSTRASIA, BURGUNDY ,Paris and Orleans; these were often combined and at times reunited under a sole ruler (under CLOTAIR I, 558-61; CLOTAIR II, 613-c622; DAGOBERT I, 630-33). Before Dagobert, chronic warfare among the kingdoms was the rule; Dagobert's sucessors, the "idle kings" left government to mayors of the palace, the Carolingians, founded in the 7th century by Pepin of Landen. In 751 PEPIN THE SHORT deposed CHEDRIC III, the last Merovingian, and became king. His son, CHARLEMAGNE, crowned emperor in 800, brought dynasty to its zenith. After Treaty of Mersen (870), kingdom of West Franks, became France; that of East Franks, Germany. (The Columbia Viking Desk Encyclopedia, 1953)
