J.M. Ruff Dies at Home Here Thursday Morning
J.M. Ruff, a highly honored and respected member of the community, died at the family home in Waurika Thursday morning August 24 following an illness of but four days. He was stricken with paralysis Monday and only regained consciousness for a few brief periods until death came.
Mr. Ruff was a pioneer citizen of this section of the state. He was born at Point Cedar, Arkansas, October 22, 1855, and was 66 years, 10 months and two days old at the time of his death. He came to what is now Jefferson County in 1894 and located 5 miles east of Terral, living in that community until after the opening of the Kiowa-Comanche country, when he settled on a school quarter five miles northwest of Waurika, where he lived until the family moved to town three years ago.
He is survived by a widow, two sons Lunsford of Soucup, Wyoming, and Velmer of Waurika, and one daughter Mrs. Bert C. Carter of Waurika. Mrs. Ruff is a daughter of W.B. Sullivan, also a pioneer settler of Jefferson County. A brother, Marion Ruff of Eula, Arkansas, and three sisters Mrs. Ellen Brewer of Witt Springs, Arkansas; Mrs. Eli Wasson of Ninekah, Oklahoma; and Mrs. Susan Smith of Fort Smith, Arkansas, also survive. The last two named were at his bedside at the time of his death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, the arrangements to be announced later, the body being held to await the arrival of the son, Lunsford, from Wyoming. Burial will be made in the Ryan Cemetery, where three children have already been laid to rest.
