STUART MORRILL RYDER

(24 Sep 1939 - 2 Dec 1995)

Stuart worked for 16 years for Martin's Shop and Save Grocery chain. Then in 1981 he purchased Town Landing Market in Falmouth ME. The Portland Press Herald newspaper gave a brief biography of him at that time. "Ryder is a Portland native whose first work in the business was at Reed's Market in the West End there when he was in grade school. When he was 15, he was hired by the owner of what became a large chain of supermarkets. He started as a bundle boy and worked his way up in the grocery business, becoming an assistant manager, first at one outlet in the chain and then another, for about 16 years.

"That all came to an end last year [1981] when he was fired, as he puts it , for being 'too nice a guy.' Then he heard that Town Landing Market was for sale, and he purchased it. Now 10 years later [1991] the market is still 'adorned with old fashioned Coke signs' and offers for sale 'fresh native ice cubes.'" It has twice appeared in national Coca Cola television advertisements.

Stuart's dog Woggy the Beagle "frequents the place and seems to be as much at home as the old Coca Cola signs out front ."
