He was born in Springfield MA, son of Franklin and Ora Knox Sweatland. He attended school in West Springfield Mass, and received a Bachelor's Degree from American International College and a Master's Degree in theology from Bangor Theological Seminary. He also received a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Maine and a Certificate of Advanced Study from UM. Mr. Sweatland was Principal of Parsonsfield Seminary for three years, taught in Gray and Windham, and was area Principal at Arlington, Newhall, and J.A. Annual School in Windham for 10 years. He served Congregational pastorates in Portland, West Concord, Mass, and Weymouth Mass. He was a recorded pastor of Windham Friends Meetings, past- president and secretary of Windham Kiwanis Club, past president of the Windham High School Forum Club, a member of the Maine Elementary Principals Association, the National Teachers Association, the Masons of North Windham, the Windham Historical Society, and was Chairman of the Building Committee of the Manchester School in North Windham.
