ELMER CHARLES "BUDDY RYDER" LEAVITT

(16 Nov 1906 - 17 Mar 1991)

He was known equally as either "Charlie Leavitt" or as "Buddy Ryder." His mother Rachel Ryder, who married Elmer Leavitt, was later divorced. Charlie, between the ages of four and seventeen, was sent to live with his Ryder grandparents in New Brunswick, who used the Ryder surname for him and nicknamed him "Buddy." The name Buddy Ryder stuck for life.

Buddy was attuned to Ryder life. He visited his grandparents in New Brunswick every summer, and in 1934, when his grandfather died, Buddy sent Pat Ryder the money to handle the funeral. In the late 1970s he bought a stone for his grandparents graves.

Buddy had a great affection for the Ryder family and the New Canaan area of New Brunswick. Throughout his life he wrote poems about the area, and in 1935 published a book of poetry called, Friend to Friend. In 1989 Positive Impact, a bi-weekly magazine formerly published in Havelock and now Salisbury NB, published many of his stories, and an article with picture.

In his younger days Buddy worked for Travellers Insurance, but at the beginning of WWII he moved to Hamilton Standard, who made parts for aircraft. He was there until his retirement in 1970.

Before his death in 1991, Buddy attended every Ryder Reunion at Hardship Acres, and is remembered with much affection by those who knew him. [Dana Ryder]
