BESSIE J. RYDER

(27 Apr 1895 - 9 Feb 1976)

She never married. Dana Ryder relates that Bessie "became a school teacher the same as her father. She went to normal School in 1913, 1914, and part of 1915. She taught in many areas of New Brunswick, such as Kingston, Norton, McAdam, Salisbury, Sackville, Petitcodiac, to name a few.

"In 1929-30 she taught at the Petitcodiac High School. Her salary was $725; In 1938-39 her grade school salary was $650, and in 1944-45 her salary was $808.

"Bessie lived for many years in Petitcodiac with her parents and next door to her great aunt and uncle, the Rev. and Mrs. Abram Perry. Glenna her niece spent a lot of time with her, travelling around the area. On January 6, 1967, Glenna had Bessie come stay with her sister in law, Mrs. Amos Oulton.

"Bessie did a lot of genealogical research on the Ryders, Thornes, and Perrys, and also on the village of Havelock and the New Canaan area. I might mention that Bessie, like many old timer, still called Havelock "Butternut Ridge," which was its original name. The post mark did not change until 1964.

:Glenna died July 15, 1975, and this took a lot out of Bessie. She wanted me to have all the family artifacts, including a spitoon belonging to my great grandmother Tamson Perry Ryder. My wife and I visited Bessie in October 1975. She was having a hard job accepting Glenna's death. Bessie herself went to the hospital December 1, 1975 and died February 9, 1976." [Dana Ryder]
