SPRINGVALE - Marjorie S. Pence died at her home on Prospect Street in Springvale on Mar. 31, 2005. She was 96. She especially loved birds, African violets, and the King James Bible.

She was born Marjorie Lena Skillin in an apartment in Springvale Square on July 29, 1908. Her father was Irving L. Skillin, a firefighter and policeman, of Springvale; her mother was Martha E. Chick, a shoe-stitcher and chambermaid, also of Springvale. Marjorie grew up in town, graduating from Sanford High School in 1926.

In 1927, she married Lawrence G. Pence of Springvale (her sixth-grade sweetheart) at her parents' home at 19 Edmund Street. The couple first lived at 29 Payne Street, and as a young woman Marjorie worked in Springvale as a bookkeeper at the Sears, Roebuck Shoe Factory, and as a clerk at Universal Shoe Corporation. She and Lawrence started a family in 1933, Marjorie giving birth to Kenneth Everett Pence at 10 Howard Street in 1933 and to David Lawrence Pence at 21 Prospect Street in 1936. During lean years during the 1930s and 40s, the family raised chickens in the backyard, and Marjorie picked and sorted apples at Lovejoy Orchards, as well as growing and preserving her own vegetables.

In 1957, Marjorie and Lawrence moved to Moody Beach, where they owned and operated rental cabins called Knox Haven by the Sea. There she took great pleasure tending to returning guests each summer and walking the length of shoreline alone in the winter months. In 1978 she and her husband returned to Springvale, and Marjorie began twenty years of service with the Meals on Wheels Association of America, delivering food to people in Springvale and Shapleigh. She was a member of the Sierra Club and the National Wildlife Federation.

Marjorie was devoted to an array of people and activities at the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church, which she attended all her life. After becoming a member in 1941, she served the church as financial secretary, as treasurer of Missions Giving and of the Gleaners, and as a member of the Missionary Society. Marjorie took deep pleasure in the church's music programs. She was a member of the York County Association of American Baptist Churches, of the American Baptist Women, and of the Ruth Chapter OES.

In her spare time, Marjorie loved planting raspberries and flowers, and reading. She took a fair amount of ribbing for her reading habits, as she insisted on digesting each word of every newspaper and magazine to which she subscribed, making tiny checkmarks at the ends of columns as she completed them. Inevitably she fell behind and was forced to store the as-yet unread issues in tall, orderly stacks. Routinely she could be found sitting in the glider on her beloved front porch, reading 'news' from seven or eight years ago.

Marjorie was predeceased by her parents; a stillborn daughter; her husband; and her sister, Virgie S. Nason. She is survived by two sons-Kenneth, and his wife, Valerie, of Atwater, Calif.; and David, and his wife, Linda, of Springvale. Also surviving are five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren-Daniel Pence, his wife, Tracy, and their children, Andrea and Benjamin, of Rowlett, Texas; Stanley Pence, his wife, Stephanie, and their children, Marina and Matthew, of Denver, Colo.; Rachel Pence of Kodiak, Alaska; David Pence Jr., his wife, Moira Driscoll, and their children, Owen and Mabel, of Portland; and Jane Pence, her husband, Douglas Masters, and their children, Julia and Adam, of Evanston, Ill.

A memorial service will be performed by the Rev. Wayne Wallace and the Rev. Dennis Reeves at the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church in Springvale on Monday at 11. a.m., with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery.
