SIMON DAY

(31 May 1804 - 12 Apr 1889)

Simon's first wife Jane Masterson died at the age of 28 in 1832. Some information that I have (don't know where I got it) indicates that Simon and Jane also had a Mary and Hannah who died young. He paid for 5 passages from England.

Also that Simon and Mary are buried at Wheatley River, (Simon - brother or father I don't know). We don't know much about his second wife Ann Stead, but they were married by L.C. Jenkins at St. Pauls Angligan Church in Charlottetown. Witnesses for their marriage were Edward Ford, James Andrews and Donald MacDonald. By the 1861 census, Simon had turned over lot 23 to his son Simon and was now living on lot 19 that consisted of 100 acres.

1841 Census:
2 females 16-45 Ann and ?
3 males under 16 Simon, Isaac and William
1 male 16-45 Simon
1 female 45-60 A mother?

Where is Jane born 1828?

1861 Census:
1 male 5-16
1 female 5-16
1 female 16-21
2 males 21-45
1 female 45-60
1 male 45-60

Simon's marriage to Ann Stead was witnessed by Edward Ford, James Andrews, Donald MacDonald and married by L.C. Jenkins.

Lived on lots 23 & 19 Bungay Kennsington, PEI.

Could Simon married to Christine McDonald have had other children? I have from Sally Bailey - Emiley C. Day m. to John A. McDonell, A. Mary Frances Day m. to Henry A. Holl, James A. Day m. to Mary McWilliams. The birthdates for them coincide with their children.

The following is a letter from Douglas M. MacDonald to Sally Bailey whose husband is a Day descendant. I have tried to type it just as he wrote it.

Dear Mrs. Bailey

I have always been told that a poor way to start a letter is with an apology, but I will do that about my writing, it is hard to read, I don't write very often.

You have been inquiring about Christy MacDonald, she was my great great aunt, my father was John my grandfather Norman, and my great grandfather was Donald, brother of Christy.

Their father was Alexander who died in Skye, Scotland at the age fifty six with a pain between the shoulders (probably pneumonia) the glen they lived in was called CAMPILS KENNORY, he was a shepherd in the hills he also dried and burned KELP and extracted the nitrate of soda that was used to make explosives that were used in the Nepolianic wars. His wife was a MacPherson we don't know her first name.

She came as a widow to Glasgow Good about 1833 with two son and two daughters.

Norman, Donald, Christy, I don't know the name of the older. It was Mary, wife of James O (or an A...Lucy's note) Andrews son of John and Margaret (Catchpole) Andrews. (I don't understand this last sentence. Could he mean that Mary is the older one, he couldn't remember?...Lucy's note)

Norman was seventeen and went to work in the lumberwoods at Mirimichi N.B., to make a bit of money. He broke his leg in the accident, he made his way home to his mother, but died from infection the rough edges of the bone had broken the skin.

We don't know where he is buried. When my great great grandmother arrived on PEI she left her youngest son Donald with her husbands brother in Belfast, PEI, he didn't like it there and ran away, he walked the forty five miles to Glasgow Good to be with his mother, he was nine years old.

He was called Donald (the widow) he never went to school, when he grew up he married an English speaking girl, by the name of Hannah Andrews who taught him to read, Hannah was a Baptist in religion, and she encouraged him to read the Bible which he did from cover to cover, he then decided the Baptist were right and became one.

Meanwhile his mother was disappointed with his marriage. She spoke only Gaelic while the young woman spoke only English, she wanted to go home. So one spring Donald sold off some cattle and she went back home to her people in Skye. I don't know if they ever heard from her after. One wonders what kind of a welcome an elderly widow would recieve. All I kow about Christy is that she had a son Archibald, he and my grandfather Norman met one day in Charlottetown, PEI (perhaps in a tavern) and they agreed to call their first sons after each other. So Archie Day called his son Norman Day.

But my grandfather had four daugthers before my father was born, he forgot his promise and they called him John. Some moths later Archie Day called and reminded him of the pledge so they added the name Archibald. He was known as John Archibald MacDonald, he would be 92 if he were living.

Norman Day was married and they had one son Wesley before they seperated. He is a bachelor about seventy years of age.

If my memory serves me right Simon Day was married three times, one wife was an Andrews, a legend about the Day family, and that they were Jewish in England, which is a religion, later becoming Christians.

We still live on the Glasgow Good directly opposite the farm where my ancestors settled. I have a brother Alfred on my grandfather's farm.

We are farmers, my wife Beth is a teacher. We have three children, Norma Jean, Margaret and Jain which is the Gaelic for John. Norma Jean has a degree in education. Margaret is studing to be a legal secretary, and Jain is a grade 12 high school student interested in golf, hockey and soccer. If you have any questions I will try to help.

We have visited your lovely state of Vermont, and have been thrilled with the lovelyness of your countryside, and the friendlyness of the people.

I hope you can see fit to vote for Ronald Regan this fall (don't take that statement seriously)

Sincerely yours
Donald M. MacDonald
