JOHN COREY , SR.
(Ca 1658 - 12 May 1712)
He is the descening child in our line.
At the eldest son, John Corey received the majority of the property from his father's estate. On 7 May 1767 he was granted land by Assembly, in East Greenwich RI. This community lies on the west side of Narragansett Bay, about 12 miles from downtown Providence. In 1686 he was made a freeman. On 22 Mar 1686 John of Portsmouth, had ten acres of land laid out to him in East Greenwich. On 4 Apr 1705, he bought of Daniel Thurston and wife Mary of Newport, 90 acres of land in East Greenwich for 40 pounds. On 10 Apr 1705 John and his wife Elizabeth, sold Jonathan Nicholls of Newport, 12 acres for 20 pounds. On 16 Apr 1705 he and wife Elizabeth sold to William Brightman of Newport 50 acres for 350 pounds. On 4 Oct 1707 he deeded to son William for love, etc, 90 acres, house and meadow, at East Greenwich.
John died 12 May 1712. His widow Elizabeth was the executrix, the will reading in abstract: "To wife, certain land and all personal. To son John, house and land, he paying certain legacies." The rest of the will is "illegible or destroyed." The inventory consisted of "wearing apparel, beds, a loom, two pairs of worsted combs, a spinning wheel, etc."
On 26 Jun 1713, his wife Elizabeth of Kings Town, sold John Mumford of Newport, 91 acres in East Greenwich for 16 pounds. On 15 Dec 1713 son Thomas, with consent of mother Elizabeth, put himself apprentice to Christopher Lindsey of Newport, house carpenter, for a term of four years, eight months and seventeen days.
John Corey's wife was Elizabeth, the daughter of a Narragansett Indian chief. Her Indian name was Minnetinka.
