HENRY ARTHUR RIDER

(28 Feb 1832 - 1924)

Fremont Rider book: "For many years one of the most successful business men and influential citizens of Seymour." "Left an orphan at nine" steadfastness of purpose and indomitable pluck won him success." He managed to get through common school, and at 19 took his first full time job, bookkeeper in a Seymour, Connecticut livery stable. Four years later he bought it and was his own master thereafter. In 1885 he bought a large farm on the outskirts of Seymour which he ran successfully as a breeding farm for race horses. All his life he accumulated real estate, and died a rich man by small town standards. Because of his integrity and thrift he was re-elected town treasure for over 40 years. He was a Congregationalist. He held many town offices. He was chairman Republican town committee for nine years and was a delegate to many party conventions. For many years an active Mason. Also a Past Master, also a member of I.O.O.F and I.O.R.M.
