BAKER NASON
(1634 - 1635 - Jun 1729)
History:
Baker Nason was born in 1634 in Kittery, Maine. His Will was probated on June 30, 1729.
Baker Nason accidentally struck his brother, Jonathan Nason, with an oar while canoeing on the Piscataqua River in 1691. Jonathan died. There was a coroners jury inquest in Maine, in which the jury voted not to bring charges against Baker. Supposedly, when Massachusetts government got wind of the verdict, Baker was brought to Boston for trial, but someone decreed it was out of jurisdiction, so he was sent back to Maine, where another inquest also decided not to charge him.
Harold Nason says Baker's peers wouldn't indict him because the Nason's had one of the garrison houses.
Baker and Elizabeth (Hatch) Nason resided in Berwick, Maine. He was a Carpenter by trade. He was at least on one occasion fined 5s to the poor for "Cursing and Swearing".
Baker Nason, August 4, 1726, "for the Encouragment of the Settling of a School at the lower End of the town." The lot was forty feet square and a school house was already on it. It was situated on the main road to Kittery, bounded easterly by the road and on the other three sides by Nason's land. (York Deeds, XIII. 75.)
He was 95 when he died in 1929.
