Jacob Hofmann
( - Bef 30 Jan 1771)
There is some evidence that our Jacob Hofman was the son of Andre Hofman and Anne Marie Toutweiller.
The early St Charles Parish civil records as abstracted by Elizabeth Gianelloni in her book -THE D'ARENSBOURG RECORDS, 1734-1769 - include several documents relating to Jacob Hoffman. One document in particular, #62 dated 23 Dec 1754, a land sale act, names "a" Jacob Hofman as the son of Andre Hofman and his spouse Anne Marie. Additional clues are found in the German Coast church records which show that Andre Hofman's spouse was Anne Marie Toutweiller. Refer to the 1748 marriage record of Catherine Hofman, a daughter of Andre and Anne Marie, to Pierre Wagenspack found on page 129 of Volume 1, ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW ORLEANS SACRAMENTAL RECORDS. Also, Volume 2, page 276, the baptism act of a child of Pierre Wagenspack and Catherine Hofman, lists Jacob Hofman as a sponsor.
An inventory of the late Jacques Hocmane (Jacob Hofman) was taken on 12 Jan 1771 when Sophia declares that she and Joseph Quarentin are to marry. This act as translated and published by Glenn Conrad in his book SAINT-JEAN-BAPTISTE DES ALLEMANDS claims there were 5 Hofman children but only names 4 daughters; Catherine who married Christophe Achtziger, Sophie who marriedJacques Miller, Marie Eve who married Jean Ory and Marie who married Jean Pierre Foltz. Refer to Act #3 for the year 1771 on page 16-17 of Conrad's book.
The date of marriage of Jacob Hofman to Sophia Jacob was prior to 15 Oct 1756 per St Charles Parish D'Arensbourg document #73, the sale of Hoffman's "habitation", as she "marks" the act as his wife. No doubt Sophia's marriage record was in the lost registers of St Charles des Allemands Church which was located on the west bank of the German Coast of the 1750s. The earlier marriage of her sister, Margaretha Jacob in 1754 is found in the surviving records of this church - refer to Volume 2, page 153 of the New Orleans Sacramental records series.
