LYONS POINT - Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Lyons Point for Leah Bertha Avant Abshire, 86, who died at 11:10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, at Kaplan Health Care. The Rev. Donald Pousson, pastor of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, will officiate for the services. Entombment will be in St. John the Baptist Church Mausoleum. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and a member of the Ladies Altar Society. Survivors include her husband, Gerald "Dago" Abshire Sr., of Kaplan; one daughter, Gloria A. Beasley and her husband, Bill, of Ferriday; three sons, Douglas J. Abshire and his wife, Effie, of Kaplan, Carlton Abshire and his wife, Mae Dell, of Kaplan, and Gerald Abshire Jr. and his wife, Gail, of Lafayette; three sisters, Maude A. Duhon, of Rayne, Clara A. Cormier, of Carencro, and Bradley A. Connor, of Lake Charles; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Abshire was preceded in death by her parents, Grady and Clothile David Avant; one brother, Grady Avant Jr.; and one granddaughter, Aline Abshire Hoffpauir. The family would like to express their thanks to Hospice of Acadiana and Kaplan Home Care. Visitation will be observed from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. today and will continue from 8 a.m. Wednesday until service time. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Wayne Abshire, Billy Beasley, Kirk Hoffpauir, Gene Cormier, Terry Duhon and Grady Dale Connor. Arrangements have been entrusted to Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home, 301 N.
