William Alexander Warthen

BIOGRAPHY: William Warthen came to Indiana from Tennessee in 1831, sho rtly afte r emigrated to Missouri. In 1835 he returned to Indiana an d purchased a farm i n Brown Township, Morgan County that he lived o n till he died. He was a member of the christian church for nearly 3 0 years. He is described in his obituary as a good husband, a kind fa ther and an exemplary christian who was loved and r espected by all. S ource for birth:"The Warthen Family" at the Martinsville, Li brary. M ilitary: William A. enlisted in Capt. David Smiths Company near Faye t teville, Tennessee. From there, he marched with the company to Fort Wi lliams, Alabama, where he remained for the period of about four month s and performed G arrison Duty. There were no battles in that distric t at that time. From Fort Williams, he was furloughed beyond the tim e of his enlistment which he understo od to be for six months and perm itted to return home to Overton County, Tenness ee, where he was disch arged. He was sent his discharge by his Captain from the home of th e Captain at Sparta, Tennessee. William A. served from June 20, 18 1 4 to February 2, 1815. Obituary: In the Morgan County Republican Th ursday, N ovember 4,1875. William Warthen, an old and esteemed citize n of Ray Twp died M onday, the 1st.Mr Warthen had been afflicted wit h palsy for several months.He wa s 87 years old, was a soldier and pen sioner of the War of 1812, and was a pione er in this county.
