Paulus Graettinger

(1751 - 1815)

BIOGRAPHY: The origin of the Paulus Graettinger (1751-1815) family ca n be trace d as far back as the early 1700's to Crythe, Bavaria, Germa ny, where Paulus Gra ettinger married Maria Magadelena (1755-1803) Leh ner. To this union a son Blasi us was born in 1795. Blasius (son of Pa ulus and Magadelena) married Anna Marie Schmidt (born 1796) and fro m this union six children resulted. The youngest th ree sons-Blasius ( son of Blasius and Anna Marie and born in 1831), Alois, and J ohan Bap tist came to the United States. Blasius immigrated in 1848 and Alois i n 1857. Like many others, they came to the U.S. to escape military co nscription in the Prussian Army and for economic conditions. German c ustom decreed that o ne son should be educated in a profession (Alois ) and the other sons in a trade . Dr. Alois Graettinger became a succe ssful physician in Milwaukee, specializin g in what is now known as ob stetrics. Blasius was trained as a stonemason as wa s his father. Joha n Baptist was a butcher and innkeeper. They all settled in th e Germa n part of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Johan, for some reason, returned to t he family in Bavaria. His descendants now own and operate a hotel an d restaurant in Landau, Bavaria, Germany, a resort city on Lake Consta nce between Germany an d Switzerland.
