BIOGRAPHY: Was the wife of Dwight D. Eisenhower, who served as preside nt of the United States from 1953 to 1961. As first lady, she closel y oversaw the domest ic operations of the White House. She generall y avoided politics, believing po litical advice and comments were no t part of the first lady's role. Mrs. Eisenh ower was a highly popula r first lady. Many women imitated her styles, including her hairstyle , which featured bangs, and her fondness for pink clothing. Mrs. Eise nhower, whose maiden name was Mamie Geneva Doud, was born in Boone, Io wa, on Nov. 14, 1896. She was the last first lady born in the 1800's . Her father ha d a successful meat-packing business. When Mamie was a n infant, the family move d to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. When she was abou t 8, they moved to Colorado and settl ed in Denver. Her parents also b ought a vacation home in San Antonio. At the ag e of 14, Mamie began s pending winters in San Antonio. In 1915, when she was 18, she met Dwi ght (Ike) Eisenhower in San Antonio. Eisenhower, then an Army lieut en ant, was stationed there. Mamie Doud and Dwight Eisenhower married o n July 1 , 1916. They had two sons, Doud Dwight, born in 1917; and Joh n Sheldon Doud, bo rn in 1922. Tragedy struck the family in 1921, whe n Doud Dwight died of scarlet fever at the age of 3. John Sheldon Dou d became an Army officer and diplomat. Dwight Eisenhower stayed in th e military most of the time until he ran for pre sident in 1952. The f amily moved numerous times as his assignments changed. Wh en she beca me first lady in 1953, Mamie Eisenhower took firm control of the hou s ekeeping operations of the White House. She approved most menus and in spected the work of the staff for cleanliness and neatness. She was re garded as an exce llent hostess at White House social functions. Mrs . Eisenhower showed little in terest in politics and seldom offered he r husband advice about how to do his jo b. In addition, she avoided pu blic comments on political and government matters
