He was an officer under Oliver Crom well in the English Civil and joine d Cromwell's New Modeled army a s a Captain on 18 April 1645. A Dr. Barney tell s us that "Nicholas S tevens of England was wealthy, owning three shires in Wale s, and afte r his death one of his heirs went over from New England, and prosecu t ed for and obtained a decree for his share of the property, but in sig ning the receipt he wrote his name "Stevens", when the attorney for t he crown declared him an imposter, as the English records were spelle d "Stephens", so the Judge r uled him out."
