James K Polk Stevens

BIOGRAPHY: This prominent farmer was born in Clay County, Indiana, Ma y 18, 1845 , and was the seventh child of James and Wealthy (Beaman) S tephens, both native s of Randolph County, North Carolina. James K. P . Stevens obtained his educati on in Clay County and March 1863, he le ft home, enlisting in Company M, Sixth I ndiana V.C. in Bowling Gree n Indiana on August 15, 1863. He took part in sever al Civil War batt les - Tazewell, Walker's Ford, the siege of Knoxville and othe rs. H e was at one time very severely injured in time of action by his hors e fa lling on him. He took part in all the engagements under Genera l Sherman from C hickamauga, Tennessee to Atlanta, Georgia, such battl es as Buzzard's Roost, Res aca, Turner's Ferry, Adairsville, Cassville , Cartersville, Altoona Pass, Big Sh anty, Burnt Hickory, Brush Mounta in, New Hope Church, Kennesaw Mountain, Culp's Farm, Smyrna, Chattaho ochie River, Peach Tree Creek, Ezra Church, Atlanta, and was with Gen eral Stoneman on his raid to Macon, Georgia. He was also in battl e s at Pulaski and Nashville, Tennessee. He was mustered out of servic e at Murf reesboro, Tennessee on September 15, 1865. After returning f rom the Army he ag ain commenced farming and in 1867 he came to Pierso n Township, Indiana. On May 17, 1867 he married Margaret F. Craft, d aughter of Peter. She was born on Aug ust 30, 1846. There were seve n children born from this union. These five were still living at th e time of this publication: Bettie, Thaddeus, Pat, Mawd, May , Sherman , and Ethel.
