Elijah Charles

The following is from AHISTORY of the DESCENDANTS OF SHILDE S MOORE I N AMERICA "In 1777 Elijah went to North Carolina where he enliste d a s a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He was patrioticall y devot ed to the Whig cause, and served as a guide to Gener al Greene's arm y through North Carolina. Besides losing al l of his property, he wen t through a hair-breadth escape th at thus occurred: Taken unexpecte d in his own house by Tor ies, who, in their haste to dispatch him, qu ickly mounted h im on a chair, where, with his neck haltered to a jois t, on ly a kick was neded to complete the job, when fortunatel y a pos se of Whigs chanced along, and, after a fierce confl ict, rescued hi m and gave his captors a speedy, unceremonio us exit to the "unknown h ome". Thus his earthly career wa s lengthened out, and, after spendin g some years after th e close of the war and the concession of America n Independe nce in North Carolina, he went to Hancock County, Georgi a , and from there in 1818 to St. Clair County, Illinois, an d settle d near Belleville, where he died in 1830, aged 79 y ears; and Aunt Ibb y, his wife, in 1845, aged 84 years; an d now as mortal yet speaking t hrough the ceaseless tongue o f immortal virtues to the yet living, th ey are side by sid e in a private cemetery, some five miles east of Be lleville ."
