Jacob Sowers
(1770 - 1843)
BIOGRAPHY: Jacob," the son of John and Sophia Sower, of Manor Hundred , Md." his wife Catherine Morricle and her father made the move fro m Frederick County, Md to Floyd County, Va in 1790-1791 time frame. O ther's of both the Sower and Mor ricle families made the journey wit h them. In Montgomery County (Floyd), Va Ja cob first purchased lan d on Little River near George and Henry Sowers, who most likely were r elated. Jacob soon sold that land and bought a large acreage on O bedi ah's Creek, waters of Indian Creek. This section of Floyd County is kn own a s Alum Ridge. In 1799 Jacob owned at least 500 acres of land. O ver the years 1 812-1823 Jacob sold his land to his sons William and J ohn (who got the home pla ce), to his son-in-law William Akers, to Geo rge Reed, Jr and perhaps to others. In May 1825, the court of Justic es of Montgomery County "Ordered that Jacob S owers Sr., be exempt i n future from the payment of county levy and poor rates o n account o f infirmity."
