Nickname:<NICK> Poplar Bill Name Suffix:<NSFX> Sr. BIOGRAPHY : William Haltom Sr. was born March 10, 1764 in North Carolina, probab ly to William Haltom. He m arried Mary "Polly" Stevens, daughter of Jo hn Stevens, born ca.1785 in Montgome ry County, North Carolina. Willia m came to Jackson Township of Owen County by 1 828, settling on Jorda n Creek. He is found in the 1828 Owen County tax list. On January 1 , 1829, William, Henry and Claborn (H)Altom were appointed trustee s o f the 16th section in Morgan Township for 1829. This section was r eserved for u se by the school system. On September 5, 1829 William p urchased 80 acres in Ja ckson Township from John Haltom, who was proba bly his son. This became his home place, in section 12 of Jackson Tow nship. He owned 140 acres in 1843 located i n Jackson Township. Willia m sold 100 acres of this land to Isaac S. Haltom, his grandson, on Fe bruary 28, 1853 for $500. William Haltom Sr., or Poplar Bill as he wa s known, died January 1860 in Owen County, at the age of 95, from th e eff ects of old age.
