Death
Owen E. BrilesHis battle with cancer finally over, Owen died at home at the age of 75 on November 3, 2003, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Manhattan, Kansas, on August 9, 1928, to Helen (Wood) and Owen Briles, Sr. After joining the U.S. Army in 1946, he served in Korea, Japan, Hawaii, and Vietnam. While stationed in Yokohama, Japan, he met and married Aiko Sasukura on December 1, 1952. During his military career, he earned several medals for excellent service including the Army Commendation Medal for service in Vietnam. Upon retiring in 1967, he and his family settled in Phoenix, OR, where he eventually accepted a job with Medford Moulding in White City. Moving to Eagle Point in 1975, he continued working for Medford Moulding.
After his retirement from Medford Moulding in 1994, he enjoyed his hobby of woodworking, building many fine pieces of furniture. He was an avid fisherman spending many days at Hyatt Lake. He also enjoyed gardening and watching the birds at the feeding station he built in his backyard.
Owen was active in his community, serving on the Fourth of July committee and cooking at the Annual VFW/Grange Fourth of July breakfast. He was an active member of VFW Post 6184 holding several positions including Post Commander and Quartermaster.
Owen is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Aiko; two daughters, Helen Cook and her husband Richard Cook of Eagle Point, and Judy McCulloch of Central Point; and one son, Martin Briles of Trail. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Taunya Myers and her husband Carl Myers of Mount Vernon, WA, Katina Briles of Botswana, Africa, Jessica Cook of Eagle Point; and great-grandsons, Michael Cook and Bailey Myers of Mount Vernon, WA. He also leaves behind his half-brother, Larry Murphy of Phoenix; and numerous other friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Owen E. Briles, Sr., his stepfather, Lloyd Murphy, and his mother, Helen Murphy.
Memorial services will be held at the VA National cemetery in Eagle Point on Friday, November 7th at 2 p.m.
