OBITUARY
William Childress, Jr. was an early Probate Judge of Leon County, Texas. He died July 9, 1853 near Leona, in Leon County. Judge Childress was a much respected, intelligent, high minded, honorable man. His obituary copied from the Leon Pioneer weekly newspaper, Centerville, Texas, dated July 20, 1853 read as follows:

"Departed this life on the morning of the 9th of July, 1853, at his residence, one mile west of Leona, in Leon County, Texas, William Childress, aged about 54. He was resigned to the will of Providence and died, to all human appearances, in the triumph of a living Faith. He has left a large family and numerous relatives to mourn his death, but our loss is his eternal gain. He emigrated to this county in the fall of the year A.D. 1841 from the state of Mississippi. Up to the time of his fatal illness, his general health, throughout the whole of his life, had been almost uninterruptedly good. His disease was the congestive fever. His illness lasted for about three weeks. Mississippi and Alabama paper will please copy."

Judge William Childress owned several tracts of land in Leon County, personal property, implements, cattle, wagons and Negro slaves. He was considered quite wealthy for his day and time.
