Sylvester Walz, 83, of Belgrade, died Monday morning, January 21, 2008, at the Country Manor Nursing Home in Sartell. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Sts. Peter and Paul in Elrosa. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 4-8:00 pm at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade. Christian Women will pray the rosary Sunday at 5:30 pm and parish prayers at 7:30 pm. The visitation will continue on Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Sylvester Walz was born December 29, 1924 in Lake George Township, Stearns County on his parents farm. He was the son of Joseph and Caroline (Deters) Walz. He served in the army during WWII. He married Florentine Eibensteiner on April 29, 1947. The couple farmed near Belgrade until 1989. Sylvester continued to live on the farm until September 2004 when he became a resident of Country Manor, Sartell. Sylvester loved his family, farming, old time music, woodworking, western movies and playing cards. He always had music in his heart and a song on his lips. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Pauls Church in Elrosa and the Saboe-Leverson VFW Post 1825 in Belgrade.
Survivors include his children, Judy (Ron) Shank of St. Cloud, Joan (Robert) Hursh of Edina, Jacqueline Walz of Waite Park, Juanita Shinnick of Irvine CA, Steven (Doris) Walz of Belgrade, Joyce (Scott Buchholz) Walz of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Kevin Shank, Kelly Diefenderfer, Alyssa and Elliot Hursh, Kaitlynn Buchholz, Zachary and Matthew Walz. He is also survived by his sister, Bertha Duke of Arizona.
Sylvester was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Florentine Walz, on September 4, 1992; grandson, Keith Shank, on June 19, 2006; sister, Martha Felling; and brothers, Joe, Frank, Pete, Eddie, Mike, Buddy, Lindy and Ray. A special thank you to the staff at Country Manor for the care and love given to Sylvester the past 3 years.
