Mathias Bauer 1700

The Bauer family came from Auel, Germany, a village about 25 miles north of Trier. The village is centered around the church which was built by Graf Johann Michel Bauer (1707-1779) in the 1750s. The Bauer home has the barn attached to the house, which was typical of many European village homes. The owners in 1986, Clara and Eberhard Meis, have all the Bauer family records which go back to the 1750s. The house is known to be well over 100 years old, possibly over 200 years old.

The story of Johann Michel Bauer is dear to the hearts of the villagers and was related by Clara and Eberhard Meis. It is said that Johann Michael Bauer fought in a crusade agains the Turks, married the Grafin Superi of Austria, and after her death, became a priest and built the church in Auel in the 1750s. The villagers are very proud of the fact that he received all seven sacraments. Since there are no Bauer recrods before the Turkish War of 1736 to 1739, I think that Johann Michel acquired the land as a result of it. In the church he built, his coat of arms hangs above the Gothic arch. Crossed in the lower portion are a Turkish sword to symbolize his participation in the war with the Turks, and a flag to symbolize the Grafin Superi, his deceased wife. Above these, and centered, is a chalice to symbolize his priesthood.
