Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for Vernon J. Rieland, 68, who died Tuesday at his home. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today and 8 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home, Melrose. Catholic Aid Society and St. Joseph's Society will pray at 7 tonight at the funeral home followed by parish prayers at 8.
Vernon Rieland was born in Oak Township, Stearns County, to Leo and Eleanor (Nathe) Rieland. He worked for 27 years on the family farm. He married Monica Boeckermann on Oct. 25, 1958, in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, St. Rosa. The couple lived in New Munich for more than 40 years. He worked for Ecker Feed Service in New Munich for more than 35 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Joseph's Society and Catholic Aid Society. He was on the New Munich Fire Department for 20 years, was the New Munich Conservation Club secretary and treasurer for 12 years and served on the New Munich City Council for 12 years.
Survivors include his wife; mother of New Munich; daughters and sons, Mary Mayers, Margaret Hinnenkamp, and William of Melrose, Steven and Dennis of Sauk Centre, James and Joseph of New Munich; brothers and sister, Robert of Sauk Centre, Charles of Fridley, Dick of New Munich, and Barbara Anderson of Cambridge; and 20 grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin.
