Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for Herbert Dierkhising, 81, who died Monday at his home. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 tonight and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home, Melrose. Melrose Veterans Honor Guard will have services at 7 tonight at the funeral home in Melrose, followed by parish prayers at 8.
Herbert Dierkhising was born in Meire Grove to Frank and Katherine (Mohr) Dierkhising. He was in the U.S. Army 15th Armored Infantry Battalion in central Europe during World War II. After he was discharged, he worked as a truck driver. He married Dolores Zierden on April 22, 1947, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The couple lived near New Munich. He was employed by Franklin Manufacturing, St. Cloud, for 33 years. He never retired and continued working as a handyman for friends and family. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Cath-olic Church, Immaculate Conception Society of Catholic Aid Association, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, American Legion Post 101 in Melrose, and Adjutant General of VFW Post 7050 in Melrose,
Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters, Danny and James of Avon, Carol Suek and Alvin of Long Prairie, Diane Herbst, Julie, Kim and Neil of St. Cloud, Marvin of Blaine, and Melinda Moeining and Lisa Danzl of Melrose; sister and brothers, Sister Fabian Dierkhising, OSB, of St. Cloud, Martin of Cold Spring and Tony of Melrose; 25 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his children, Alice and Allen; one grandson; and sisters and brothers, Sister Rosalia Dierkhising, OSB, Sister Niceta Dierkhising, OSB, Emelia Roering, Dorothy, Joseph, Aloys and an infant sister. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
