Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Catholic Church for Herman Beste, 81, who died Monday at St. Cloud Hospital.Interment will follow in the parish cemetery with military honors provided by Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.Friends may call from 3:30 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 to 10:30 a.m.Thursday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home. Sauk Centre Seniors will pray at 4 tonight at the funeral home in Sauk Centre followed by Sauk Centre United Veterans at 7, parish prayers at 8 and St. Paul's Catholic Aid at 8:30.
Herman Beste was born in Sauk Centre Township, Stearns County, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Heidgerken) Beste. He was in the U.S. Army in the 95th Infantry Division during World War II. He was posted in the European theater and received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He married Olivia Butkowski Henry on Sept. 12, 1951, in St. Paul's Catholic Church. He was employed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation from 1954 until he retired in 1980. He was a member and former usher of St. Paul's Catholic Church, St. Paul's Catholic Aid, Sauk Centre Seniors, Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853, American Legion Post 67, Disabled American Veterans, Military Order of the Purple Heart and 95th Infantry Division Association.
Survivors include his wife; daughters and sons, Mary Lou Lieser and Janet Hinnenkamp of Cold Spring, Carol Stalboerger of Princeton, Bill Henry of Wolf Point, Mont., Norman Henry of Hinton, Iowa, Loren Beste of Sauk Centre and Alan Beste of St. Joseph; brother, Joseph of Sauk Centre; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers, Angeline Botz, Clara Kenna, Hildegard, George, Conrad, William, Robert, Edmund and Herbert. Memorials are preferred to St. Michael's Hospital.
