Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church for Eldred H. Fuchs Sr., 70, who died Sunday at St. Benedict Center, St. Cloud.Burial will be in the parish cemetery.Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home. Melrose Veterans Honor Guard services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in Melrose followed by parish prayers at 8:30.
Eldred Fuchs Sr. was born in Zion Township, Stearns County, to Peter and Zita (Schaefer) Fuchs, and was in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He married Jean Zirbes on April 21, 1951, in Fort Riley, Kan. They lived in Fort Riley, Arlington, Va., and Freeport before moving to Greenwald. He worked at Funk Implement for three years and also hauled milk for Greenwald Creamery for several years. He owned and operated Greenwald Blacksmith Shop for several years and Fuchs Construction in Greenwald for more than 35 years. He also was the gravedigger in Greenwald. In 1987, he left the excavating business to drive semi for Fuchs Transport Inc., Melrose. He was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Greenwald, St. Michael's Men's Society and the American Legion Post in Melrose.
Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters, Eldred P. Jr., Mary Kay Maus, Yvonne Berscheid, James and Mark of Melrose; brothers and sisters, Virgil and Cletus of Paynesville, Vivian Bertram of Greenwald, Isabel Meyer of Cold Spring, and Cleone Nistler of St. Cloud; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
