The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2009, at Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedicts Monastery, St. Joseph, for Sister Michaela Fuchs, who died on September 8, 2009, at Saint Scholastica Convent. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent on Thursday, September 10, from 1-6 p.m. or for a Prayer Vigil at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedicts Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. until the funeral on Friday, September 11, at 4 p.m.
S. Michaela (Cecilia), the third child of Michael and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Fuchs, was born on March 12, 1913, in Langdon, N.D. She entered Saint Benedicts Monastery in 1927, made her first monastic profession on July 11, 1933, and perpetual profession on July 11, 1936. S. Michaela attended Sacred Heart School in East Grand Forks and graduated from Saint Benedicts High School. She earned a bachelors degree in French from the College of Saint Benedict and a masters degree in speech from Marquette University, Milwaukee. She undertook further studies at the University of Minnesota; The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.; University of Nevada, Reno; and Overseas Language Institute in Toulouse, France, through Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. Certificates were awarded from Leysin, Switzerland; Evian, Rambouillet, Alsace and Reims, France.
In 1936, S. Michaelas 62-year ministry in education began with teaching speech and directing plays at the College of Saint Benedict. Many years of teaching English, speech, drama and French followed at St. Boniface High School in Cold Spring, Memorial High School in Pierz and Cathedral High School in St. Cloud, where she taught French for a record 22 years, 19651987. She led 20 European summer trips with student groups during those years. From 19871993, she served in the Cathedral High School Office, and added five years as a volunteer before she retired to Saint Scholastica Convent.
S. Michaela is survived by the Sisters of her Benedictine community, nieces and nephews, and one sister, Geneva (Don) Schreiber of Little Falls. Four brothers (William, Arnold, Leander, and Reverend Athanase, OSB) and one sister (Sister Magdalene, OSC) are deceased. Please direct memorial gifts to Saint Benedicts Monastery.
