Individual Details
Christopher "Christ" Ahles
(January 15, 1827 - February 17, 1913)
Notes of Tim Ahles:
"They were farmers, of the Catholic faith, and went to church in Rockville, MN."
Margaret and Christopher's wedding was witnessed in 1859 by Mathias Ahles and Margareth Schmals, Gotthard Bauer and Margaretha Ernst of St. James, Jacobs Prairie, MN.
Christopher served in the Prussian Army for two years around 1845. He came to the U.S. in 1854 and moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin. He moved to Minnesota in 1856.
Exerpts from the book, "All I Know About the Roots and Shoots of the Joseph and Elizabeth Nett Ahles Family" by Antonette Ahles, OSF, 1992 (distributed to family):
Christopher Ahles came to Minnesota in the spring of 1856 when he took a claim in Rockville Township. Christopher and his brother Mathias must have worked together to fell trees for the first log house which they shared with their mother until such time as dwellings for each could be built.
It is likely that the first house was built on Christopher's land, which was on the southwest shore of Grand Lake. Unknown to them the Bauer family settled on the other side of the lake a year later. One evening when the Ahles' were singing, the wind was just right to carry the sound across the lake. Upon hearing the singing, several members of the Bauer family rowed across the lake to find out who their neighbors were. They not only became good friends, but they soon became related through marriage. I do not have the exact date but Christopher married Margaret Bauer, possibly within the year.
Christopher's nephew, John Ahles, called him "Onkel Shtoffel" after the German pronunciation of Christopher as Krist-shto'fer, hence the contraction, Shtoffel". Christopher was a favorite of John's children.
