Herman Koetter Who Homesteaded Near King's Lake Died Saturday, Aged 82 Years
The death of Herman Koetter, a pioneer settler of the Freeport vicinity, occurred Saturday morning, January 27, at the home of his son, Math. Death followed a very brief illness and was due to pneumonia. He was taken ill Friday evening and death occurred the following morning.
Herman Koetter was born in Westphalia, Epe, Germany, Novembert 12, 1840 and at his death was past 82 years of age. When about thirty years of age he came to this country and located on a homestead north of King's Lake; this farm being now occupied by Carl Athman. A few years later he was married to Mary Homberg at New Munich. He later sold the farm he homesteaded and bought the farm now occupied by his son a mile west of Freeport.
Mrs. Koetter died in 1887. Four children were born to them, three of whom died when young, Math Koetter being the only surviving child.
The deceased is also mourned by a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Herzog, of Freeport. The deceased was one of the strong and staunch hearted pioneers who developed this community from its virgin state, and bore his share of the burdens of the early days. He was a highlty respected citizen and of great good to his community. The funeral was held Tuesday forennon at the Sacred Heart church at Freeport and interment made in the church cemetery. Fr. Linus officiated at the services, Fr. Maurus beging unable to officiate because of illness.
