MERRIMACK – Eugene “Gene” Edmond Mooney, 87, went home to Our Lord on October 22, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Joan Rosalie (née Brands) Mooney for 62 years, a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Gene was born on April 23, 1929 in Dorchester, Massachusetts and grew up in Everett, Massachusetts. He is the son of Frederick W. Mooney (1897 - 1929) and Alice M. (née Bellemore) Mooney (1902 - 1997). Gene attended Everett High School where he graduated first in his Class of 1947. In addition to being Valedictorian, he was Captain of his school’s basketball team where he played at the Boston Garden, Editor of the yearbook, a member of the Gilbert & Sullivan Theatrical Club, and played both clarinet and saxophone in the school band.

Gene was a graduate of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he earned his A.B. in chemistry in 1951. At Harvard he belonged to the Dudley House and was a member of the Harvard University Band. He enjoyed corresponding with classmates, and attended his 50th class reunion in 2001, as well as his 60th class reunion in 2011.

Gene obtained his M.S. in chemistry from the University of Akron in Ohio, and completed his coursework toward his Ph.D. in chemistry at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Gene had an extensive career as a Research and Development Chemist, focused on rubber vulcanization at B.F. Goodrich in Akron, Ohio and in Fayetteville, North Carolina; Converse Rubber Company in Malden and Wilmington, Massachusetts; and Griswold Rubber Company in Moosup, Connecticut. He was a gifted scientist having worked on special projects for the U.S. government during the Korean War. He had been a distinguished member of the American Chemical Society since 1952.

Gene was well known for his love of family, politics, Big Band era music, reading multiple daily newspapers, theater, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and current events including the upcoming election and voting pro-life. He was a devout Roman Catholic who was confirmed by His Eminence Richard Cardinal Cushing of the Archdiocese of Boston. Gene married the former Joan Rosalie Brands on May 8, 1954 at Annunciation Church in Akron, Ohio. The two met on Easter Sunday. He assisted with Joan’s brother’s campaign for State Representative.

Gene will be greatly remembered for his principled character that influenced the members of his large family in countless ways, and the profound interest he had in the lives of all his children and grandchildren. In his 50th Harvard University Reunion book he said he mostly wanted to be remembered as a “loving husband, father and grandfather.”

Gene will be dearly missed by all those he leaves behind until all are reunited again in the glory of the Kingdom of Heaven, including his wife of 62 years Joan Rosalie Mooney; his six daughters and one son: Mary T.
