Polycarp Meyer
Polycarp Herman Meyer of Yakima, Wash. passed away peaceably March 11, 2010, in Cannon Beach, Ore., at home with his son, Philip Meyer. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, March 19, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Cathedral with interment following at Calvary Cemetery.
Poly was born Sept. 14, 1920, in Grove Township to Aloys C. and Elizabeth A. Meyer. He was the oldest of 10 children. He was educated at West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, graduating in 1939. Following graduation he moved to California and was employed at Northrup Aircraft as a milling machine operator. He met Julia Marie Lee in April of 1943 and they were married Oct. 14, 1944, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Bellflower, Calif. He entered the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in the European Theater. He was a Quarter Master Class 1. He shipped food to divisions in the military during the war. Poly was in the 618QM Depot Company in Nuremburg, Germany. He also served in the Korean War at the Dougway Proving Ground in Utah working in the warehouse. Following his service he went to work at a dairy processing company in Pomona, Calif. He and Julie moved to Ephrata, Wash., in 1955 where he worked for Darigold. In 1955 he transferred to Yakima Darigold and worked there for 28 years until his retirement in 1983. Following retirement, he and Julie spent their winters in Desert Hot Springs, Calif. He enjoyed traveling and fishing. His favorite trips were to Alaska and his annual fishing trip to remote Ontario, Canada with his son Jim. He was a member of the St. Paul's Catholic Church in Yakima, Wash.
Surviving family members include Patricia Meyer of Suquamish, Wash., and Elizabeth Meyer of Hillsboro, Ore.; James and Janice Ehle/Meyer of Centerbrook, Conn., and Philip Meyer of Canby, Ore.; 10 grandchildren, Michelle and Amy Voiland, Marie and Robin Ehle/Meyer, Nicole and Conner Desgrosellier, Brian, Megan, Sarah and Emily Gamel; six brothers, Alban and FernAlice Meyer, Arnold and MaryAnn Meyer, David and Jane Meyer of Sauk Centre, Leo and Janice Meyer and Aloys "Red" and Arlene Meyer of Melrose, and Bernard and Rosie Meyer from Parkers Prairie; and 52 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Julia in February, 2000 and his daughter Barbara Desgrosellier May, 2003. He was also preceded in death by a brother James and sister Marcella and infant sister Anna. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Diabetics Association.
