Ervin B. Proell, age 89, a resident of Alexandria, formerly of Osakis, died Thursday, March 26, 2009, at Knute Nelson in Alexandria. Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis with Father Ralph Zimmerman officiating. Music will be provided by organist, Charmaine Hartmann and the church choir. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., with a 7 p.m., prayer service, Tuesday at the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis and continue hour prior to the service a the church. Ervin was born Feb. 15, 1920, to Johannus and Anna (Hinnenkamp) Proell in Sauk Centre. He grew up in the Sauk Centre/Padua area where he attended country school. He was baptized into the catholic faith at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Following his education he worked on the family farm. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, serving in Europe and Alaska. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the Sauk Centre area to farm.
Ervin was united in marriage to Gladys Wallin on Sept. 16, 1946, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Following their marriage he continued farming until 1976, when he began working at Petro Stop gas station in Alexandria for his family for several years. They then moved to Sebeka where he worked for a cheese factory. He retired in 1980, and they moved to Osakis. His wife, Gladys died in 1995. Following her death, he moved to Knute Nelson where he remained until his death. He was a former member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Osakis VFW and the Sebeka American Legion. He enjoyed playing cards. He was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. In his earlier years he pitched for the Sauk Centre softball team. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Ervin is survived by three daughters, Linda (Harvey, Sr.) Bolstad, Debbie Radermacher ,both of Alexandria and Cherylle (Ken) Duerr of Freeport; four sons, Ron (Judy) Proell of Alexandria, Steve Proell of Fergus Falls, Dave (Shirley) Proell of Alexandria and Kevin Proell of Garfield; a brother, Roman Proell of Sauk Centre; a sister-in-law, Violet Friedrichs of Sauk Centre; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys; two daughters, Patricia and Sandra; a son, Bruce; a daughter-in-law, Kim Proell; three brothers, Elmer, Clarence and Edwin; and an infant sister. Pallbearers will be Scott Bolstad, Mike Proell, Harvey Bolstad, Jr., Brian Radermacher, Ryan Bolstad, Jason Bolstad, Nick Holloway and Jacob Bradley. Honorary pallbearers will be D.J. Proell, Christopher Proell, Stephanie Proell, Krista Proell, Holly Proell, Ashley Holloway, Tammy Reimoldt, Sheila Bolstad, Theresa Bolstad, Corey Radermacher, Amanda Proell and Samantha Proell.
