Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2002 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN for Cuthbert (Gus) Hommerding, age 79, who died Tuesday at his home in Cold Spring. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with full military honors provided by Cold Spring VFW Post 6915 and American Legion Post 455. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Thursday, and from 9:00 to 10:00 Friday morning at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring. The Cold Spring VFW and Legion Post will pray at 7:00 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening.
Gus was born in Pearl Lake, MN to Nicholas and Rosalia (Reiter) Hommerding. He married Marian G. Bolfing on September 19, 1946 in Rockville, MN. He farmed south of St. Cloud on the family farm for many years, while working as a welder for Burlington Northern Railroad. Gus was a Veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Infantry in Germany. He was a member of the Cold Spring Legion, Post 455; an Eagle's Club member; a life member and past Commander of VFW Post 6915 in Cold Spring. He was also a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. In his retirement Gus enjoyed woodworking, reading, spending time with his grandchildren and playing cards with friends and family.
Survivors include his wife, Marian of 56 years; children, Allen of Minneapolis, Larry of Waite Park, Bonnie (Mark) Gohmann of St. Joseph, Debbie (Xavier) of Santa Rosa, CA, Jim (Doneva) of Keller, TX, Cindy (Russ) Spychala of St. Joseph, Cheryl (Bruce) Welle of St. Cloud, Patty (Bryan) Welle of Wausau, WI, Mary (John) Massmann of Cold Spring and Nicholas (Lori) of Cold Spring; brothers and sisters, Iris Bruemmer, Wally (Marion) Hommerding, Esther (Jerry) Kirchoff, Ramona Wienhold and Jo (Bob) Bauer; 23 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Elmer; 1 infant sister; 3 infant brothers and 1 infant great grandchild.
