James Overman
James M. "Big Jim" Overman, age 64 of Freeport, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at the Albany Area Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 13, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Rev. Roger Klassen, OSB officiated with entombment following in the parish mausoleum at a later date.
James M. Overman was born on Nov. 21, 1941, in Albany Township, Stearns County, to Joseph and Hilda (Borgerding) Overman. Jim attended country school and high school in Albany. He then volunteered with the Army Reserves. On Jan. 9, 1965, Jim married Gloria Brang at St. John's Catholic Church in Meire Grove, resided in Freeport where he worked at the Freeport Roller Mill. Jim was also self-employed with his wife as owners of Big Jim's Corner Bar in Freeport and then Jim & Gloria's Restaurant in Albany. Jim was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and the Albany American Legion. He enjoyed camping, touring, bike riding, fishing, watching football, annual hunting trip with the boys, and helping out with farm duties at his brother's farm. Jim loved spending time with his friends, family and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Gloria Overman of Freeport; children, Sheila (Dale) Ahrens of Cold Spring, Denise (Daryl) Fischbach of Eden Valley, Gary (Lisa) Overman of Cold Spring, Russ (Sandy) Overman of Cold Spring, and Jodi Overman of St. Cloud; nine grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Jenny Hiltner of Freeport, Doreen Robillard of Lodi, Calif., Bernice (Ruben) Muske of St. Joseph, Mary (Doc) Harren of Cold Spring, Ed (Millie) Overman of Freeport, Teresa (Don) Chamberlain of Anoka, Norb (Audrey) Overman of Albany, Ruth (George) Traeger of Melrose, and Fred (Mary) Overman of Spicer; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Overman of Waite Park and Betty Overman of Albany.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joe Jr. and Ray Overman; infant sister Celine; and brother-in-law, Clarence "Smokey" Hiltner. Serving as casket bearers were Doug, Keith, Dale and John Overman, Jim Hiltner and Chuck Muske. Honorary bearers were Ron Finken, Charlie Heidgerken, Tim Linn, Danny Bueckers and Jerry Timp. Serving as cross bearer was Travis Overman, scripture bearer was Mitchell Fischbach, lector was Keith Overman, petitions by Brandon, Austin and Travis Overman, and gift bearers were Alicia, Andrea, Kaylee and Morgan Overman and Christine Fischbach. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Freeport.
