Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 12:30 PM at St. Paul's Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Genevieve V. Gerads, age 88, of Sauk Rapids who passed away on Friday, January 11, 2008 at Alterra Sterling House. The Reverend Al Stangl will officiate. Friends may call from 4-8 PM on Tuesday, January 22 at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud and one hour before services Wednesday at the church. Parish prayers will be at 5:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Private burial will be in Wadena, MN at a later date.
Gen Reller was born on June 26, 1919 to George S. and Margaret (Hess) Reller at St. Raphael's Hospital in St. Cloud. She grew up in Richmond and graduated from Eden Valley High School. After receiving her teaching degree at St. Cloud Normal School, she taught in a one-room school house near St. Anthony. She married Hubert C. Gerads of St. Anthony on November 24, 1942. They moved to Wadena, MN where she was a housewife and elementary school teacher. After her husband's death in 1964 she raised her five children and continued to teach until she retired from teaching and moved to St. Cloud in 1974 where she operated a rental house for college students and opened Granny Gen's Day Care. She cared for and potty-trained an untold number of children until she retired in 1983. She was involved in various volunteer activities in her church and community and at Child Care Choices where she was eventually offered a job checking day care provider menus. She retired for the last time at age 83. She continued to take on all competitors at Scrabble and baked the world's best caramel rolls.
Survivors include her children Gerald (Carol Weiler) of Sartell, Grace (Mike) Norberg of Willmar, Gail (Bill) Faulk of Osceola, WI, Glen (Rosemary) of Hutchinson, and Geneva (Tom) Kalahar 0f Olivia; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; siblings Monica Reller of Fairfield, CA, Maurice (Lavonne) of Kandiyohi, Margaret (Jim) Mulligan of Seal Beach, CA, Dick of Great Falls, MT, Janet Reller of Los Angeles, CA, and Eugene (Ako) of Tucson, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Hubert C. Gerads on March 18,1964; sister Marie Garding; great-grandson Peyton Gerads. A special thanks to staff at Country Manor Senior Apartments, Alterra Sterling House, and Heartland Hospice who all gave her such loving care the past year. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to the New St. Cloud Library Fundraising Campaign.
