Services will be 12:30 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church for Elmer G. Winter, 79, formerly of 116-22nd Ave. S, who died Wednesday at St. Benedict's Care Center. Entombment will be in Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum with full military honors provided by St. Cloud VFW Post 428. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Daniel Funeral Home, St. Cloud. St. Cloud VFW Post 428 will pray at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in St. Cloud followed by parish prayers at 7.
Elmer Winter was born in Spring Hill to Walter and Veronica (Weymann) Winter. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving with the 15th Air Force in Italy. He married Virginia C. Klaphake on Oct. 2, 1946, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, St. Cloud. He lived in St. Cloud all of his married life. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 31 years, retiring in 1976. He owned and operated the Winter/Prom Insurance Agency for 21 years, retiring in 1983. He was involved in the organization of the postal union and had various offices. He was a member of St. Cloud VFW Post 428 and St. Anthony's parish, where he was on the parish council and was an usher. He also was on the board of directors of the St. Cloud Credit Union.
Survivors include his wife; children, Bill, John, Connie and Wayne of St. Cloud, Kathy Stone of Wyoming, Minn., Lee of Waite Park, Jim of Clearwater, Betty of Minneapolis, and Jean Salinas of Hastings; 16 grandchildren; and sisters and brother, Irene Tomczik and Ernest of St. Cloud, Esther Heinen of Spring Hill, and Lorayne Primus of Swanville.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Othmar and Clarence.
